Role Overview
The Financial Accountant will support the Finance function by ensuring accurate accounting records, reliable financial reporting, and timely statutory submissions. This role will be central to maintaining the integrity of the general ledger, supporting month-end and year-end processes, and ensuring that financial information is prepared in line with internal standards and regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will be technically strong, detail-oriented, and confident working across reconciliations, VAT, fixed assets, journals, audits, and financial reporting. This position requires a qualified accounting professional with strong organisational skills, sound judgement, and the ability to work effectively within a busy finance environment.
- Balance Sheet Reconciliations: Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations for assigned accounts, ensuring that balances are accurate and reconciling items are followed up and resolved in a timely manner.
- VAT and Tax Reporting: Prepare VAT returns and related tax reconciliations, ensuring that submissions are accurate, complete, and aligned with applicable requirements.
- Fixed Asset Register: Maintain the fixed asset register, including asset additions, disposals, depreciation postings, and related reconciliations.
- Journal Entries: Prepare and post journals relating to accruals, prepayments, provisions, depreciation, and other month-end adjustments.
- Month-End and Year-End Close: Support the monthly and annual closing processes by preparing schedules, posting adjustments, reviewing balances, and meeting reporting deadlines.
- Audit Support: Assist with internal and external audit processes by preparing reconciliations, schedules, explanations, and supporting documentation.
- Statutory Submissions: Prepare and submit National Statistics Office returns and other required reports accurately and within the required timeframes.
- Accounting Compliance: Ensure that accounting records and processes are maintained in line with accounting standards, company policies, internal controls, and regulatory obligations.
- Financial Reporting Support: Assist senior finance team members with financial reports, analysis, and management information as required.
- Process Improvement: Support improvements to accounting processes, controls, documentation, and reporting procedures.
- Cross-Departmental Liaison: Work with internal departments to gather information, clarify transactions, and ensure the completeness and accuracy of financial data.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Qualification: Fully qualified accountant, such as ACCA, ACA, CIMA, or equivalent.
- Experience: Previous experience in financial accounting, general ledger accounting, or a similar finance role.
- Accounting Knowledge: Strong understanding of double-entry bookkeeping, accounting principles, reconciliations, and financial reporting processes.
- VAT and Statutory Knowledge: Experience with VAT reporting, tax reconciliations, statutory submissions, and related compliance requirements.
- Systems Knowledge: Proficient in Microsoft Excel and comfortable using accounting software or ERP systems.
- Technical Competence: Strong technical accounting ability, with confidence in preparing journals, reconciliations, schedules, and reports.
- Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy when reviewing figures, preparing reports, posting journals, and maintaining accounting records.
- Organisation: Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage reporting deadlines and multiple finance tasks.
- Analytical Skills: Able to review financial information, identify discrepancies, investigate issues, and support practical solutions.
- Communication Skills: Clear and professional communicator, able to liaise effectively with colleagues, management, auditors, and internal departments.
- Integrity: Handles financial information with confidentiality, accountability, and professionalism.
- Teamwork: Willing to collaborate with the wider Finance team and other departments to support accurate and timely reporting.
