Job Description

Position Title: Barista-Gelatiere
Reports to: Shop Manager

Job Purpose / Objective:

The Barista-Gelatiere plays a key frontline role in delivering the Sottozero experience. The position ensures that customers receive premium service in line with Sottozero’s quality standards, while maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment. The role combines gelato service, coffee preparation, pastry preparation, cash handling, stock management, suggestive selling, and operational support, including adherence to food safety regulations and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Main tasks and responsibilities
  • Serve gelato, coffee, pastries, and beverages to Sottozero standards of quality and presentation.
  • Prepare pastry items and other food products according to established recipes and guidelines.
  • Provide excellent customer service, engaging in suggestive selling to promote products and upsell.
  • Handle cash transactions, operate POS system, reconcile daily sales, and ensure accuracy in payments.
  • Receive stock deliveries, check against order lists, and store stock products correctly in their designated areas (frozen, chilled, or dry).
  • Maintain cleanliness of the service area, seating areas, storage rooms, and washrooms at all times.
  • Follow strict food hygiene and safety protocols in line with HACCP requirements.
  • Replenish and stock products in display and service areas to ensure full availability.
  • Assist in daily and weekly inventory counts, reporting shortages or discrepancies to the Shop Supervisor / Shop Manager.
  • Execute closing and opening procedures, following established SOPs.
  • Support colleagues and contribute to teamwork within the outlet.
Educational and skill requirements
  • Strong customer service orientation with a positive and welcoming attitude.
  • Ability to prepare and handle pastry and food items in line with food safety standards.
  • Competence in cash handling, POS transactions, and reconciliation procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of receiving, checking, and storing stock in frozen, chilled, and dry conditions.
  • Ability to follow SOPs and maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene.
  • Basic knowledge of coffee preparation and food handling is considered an asset.
  • Good communication skills in English (Maltese and/or Italian is an advantage).
  • Team player, reliable, and proactive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Attention to detail and ability to multitask.

Working Conditions

  • Shift-based role including mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Requires standing for extended periods and handling repetitive tasks
  • Must be available for closing shifts and occasional additional hours during peak seasons.
