Role Overview
The Senior Accountant will manage a varied portfolio of direct tax assignments, combining regulatory reporting, technical analysis and client advisory work. The position also carries responsibility for guiding less-experienced colleagues, addressing advanced taxation matters and maintaining effective communication with clients and public bodies.
Key Responsibilities
- Corporate Tax Compliance: Prepare and independently verify company tax calculations, annual declarations, shareholder distribution records and claims relating to tax repayments.
- Technical Tax Assignments: Analyse challenging taxation scenarios and complete advanced calculations involving Malta’s Notional Interest Deduction framework and fiscal unity provisions.
- Individual Taxation: Compile and lodge personal tax declarations accurately and within the applicable filing periods.
- International Reporting: Complete the required documentation arising from FATCA, CRS and relevant EU administrative cooperation directives.
- Client Advisory: Explain the Maltese tax treatment of transactions and help clients understand the practical impact of developments in cross-border taxation.
- Regulatory Liaison: Communicate with the appropriate Maltese authorities to resolve standard filing enquiries and other taxation-related matters.
- Client Relationship Management: Attend meetings, respond to client queries and establish trusted professional relationships across the assigned portfolio.
- Team Supervision: Review work completed by junior colleagues, offer technical direction and support their continued professional development.
- Technical Content: Contribute to articles, updates and other written material addressing taxation topics and regulatory changes.
Qualifications, Skills and Attributes
- Education: Applicants must hold a recognised professional accountancy qualification, such as ACCA.
- Tax Certification: A professional taxation certificate issued by the Malta Institute of Taxation would be advantageous. Candidates without this credential should demonstrate sufficient practical expertise and be prepared to pursue the qualification if required.
- Experience: At least two years of relevant professional exposure within taxation or the corporate services sector is required.
- Language Skills: Excellent command of English is required to succeed in this role. The ability to communicate in Maltese would be an asset.
- Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal abilities are necessary for explaining technical matters clearly to clients, colleagues and regulatory representatives.
- Interpersonal Skills: The successful candidate will be confident, collaborative and capable of building constructive relationships while also operating independently.
- Technical Skills: Applicants should be comfortable using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Familiarity with the application of Maltese VAT legislation would be beneficial.
- Attention to Detail: A careful and thorough approach is essential when examining calculations, documentation and statutory filings.
- Organisation: The role requires effective workload planning, sound prioritisation and the ability to complete assignments within firm submission dates.
- Self-Motivated: Candidates should show initiative, professional curiosity and a genuine interest in extending their taxation knowledge.
- Problem-Solving: The preferred applicant will be able to assess detailed tax questions, apply the relevant rules and determine practical courses of action.
