Lifts Technician/Troubleshooter
To assist in carrying out work as directed by Lifts Manager or his immediate superior.
Main tasks and responsibilities
- To carry out troubleshooting, fault-finding, repair and maintenance of lift installations as directed by the Lifts Manager or immediate superior.
- To diagnose and rectify electrical, mechanical and control-system faults and identify the root cause of lift breakdowns and operational problems.
- To read, interpret and work from electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, lift drawings, manuals and other technical documentation as required.
- To use appropriate testing and diagnostic equipment safely and correctly to identify faults and verify the proper operation of lift equipment.
- To troubleshoot lift controllers, drives/inverters, door operators, safety circuits, relays, contactors, sensors, switches, limit switches and other associated lift equipment.
- To carry out necessary repairs, adjustments, replacements and corrective works to restore lifts to safe, reliable and efficient operation.
- To carry out appropriate functional, operational and safety checks following repairs and before returning the lift to service.
- To ensure that all lift safety devices and safety circuits are inspected, tested and confirmed to be operating correctly before the lift is returned to service.
- To immediately report any safety defect, unsafe condition or malfunction that may affect the safe operation of the lift to the Lifts Manager or immediate superior.
- To ensure that no lift is returned to service where a safety-critical fault remains unresolved.
- To ensure that isolation, lock-out/tag-out and all other applicable safety procedures are followed before commencing work on lift equipment.
- To ensure that safety devices, safety circuits and protective systems are never bypassed, defeated or left in an unsafe condition.
- To comply fully with all Company health and safety procedures and applicable lift safety requirements.
- To ensure that the correct safety apparel and personal protective equipment are worn at all times and that safe working practices are followed.
- To identify recurring faults and potential technical problems and report these to the Lifts Manager or immediate superior, recommending appropriate corrective or preventative solutions where possible.
- To identify potential difficulties when carrying out work and discuss alternative methods or solutions with the Lifts Manager or immediate superior.
- To ensure that all necessary tools, test equipment, spare parts and materials required for the assigned work are available, suitable and maintained in good working condition.
- To ensure that all work is carried out to the required technical, quality and workmanship standards.
- To take proper care of all Company tools, equipment and test instruments entrusted to him and ensure that these are used, stored and maintained safely and correctly.
- To liaise professionally with clients regarding minor technical matters and report any significant technical, operational or safety issues to the Lifts Manager or immediate superior.
- To maintain a professional attitude and promote the good image and reputation of the Company at all times.
- To provide technical assistance and guidance to technicians, installers and labourers as required.
- To maintain discipline and ensure that personnel assigned to him carry out their duties safely, correctly and efficiently.
- To act as the Company's representative on site when required and deal with minor matters within the scope of his responsibilities.
- To assume responsibility for lower-grade personnel working under his direction and ensure that work is carried out safely, efficiently and to the required standard.
- To ensure that the work area is kept clean, orderly and free from unnecessary hazards during and after completion of the work.
- To complete all required service reports, fault reports, inspection records and other relevant documentation accurately and promptly.
Educational and skill requirements
- Good knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems
- Ability to install, maintain, service and repair lifts/elevators
- Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot electrical and mechanical faults
- Knowledge of lift control systems, motors, wiring and safety components
- Ability to read and understand technical drawings, wiring diagrams and manuals
- Good understanding of health and safety procedures
