Legal Officer – Legal & International Relations

The FIAU is seeking to strengthen its Legal Affairs Section through the recruitment of a Legal Officer within the Legal and International Relations team. This is a unique opportunity for those who wish to build a career path in the anti-money laundering and counter funding of terrorism (AML/CFT) area.

Main tasks and responsibilities

As a Legal Officer, you will be involved in advising the FIAU on legal matters, assisting persons subject to the Prevention of Money Laundering and Funding of Terrorism Regulations in complying with their obligations, drafting laws, regulations or guidance in the sphere of AML/CFT, contributing to the shaping of EU policies, positions, binding and non-binding instruments and supporting the FIAU’s international relations efforts. Your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Contributing towards the drafting of legal positions, research papers and national legislation, including the transposition/implementation of EU legislation in the area of AML/CFT; 
  • Providing general legal counsel to any internal Section of the FIAU, as required; 
  • Representing the Legal Affairs Section in any internal committee of the FIAU and in any external committees/meetings that the FIAU is a member of or is required to participate in;
  • Assisting in the drafting/vetting of agreements to which the FIAU is a party; 
  • Representing the FIAU or Malta in international fora of AML/CFT relevance;
  • Contributing towards the FIAU’s international relations efforts, including by drafting and negotiating Memoranda of Understanding, coordinating bilateral or multilateral meetings, participating in working groups, replying to queries and questionnaires and assisting with other duties as required;
  • Liaising with government departments, agencies, other authorities and private entities on legal issues that may arise from time to time and supporting the FIAU’s national cooperation efforts; 
  • Participating on behalf of the FIAU in outreach initiatives of AML/CFT relevance, as required;
  • Assisting and representing the FIAU in any legal proceedings initiated against the FIAU or that the FIAU is otherwise involved in, as required; 
  • Carrying out any other duties that may be assigned by senior management.
Educational and skill requirements
  • LL.D. or M.Adv. Degree or an equivalent academic qualification in law at NQF7 or better (applicants in the process of obtaining their final academic qualification by not later than the end of December 2025, will still be considered)
  • Warrant or registration to practise as an advocate in Malta (applicants intending to obtain such warrant or registration by not later than 12 months from their employment date, will still be considered)
  • Duly admitted to the Register of Legal Professionals and Law Firms in terms of Articles 79 of the Code of Organisation and Civil Procedure, Cap. 12 of the Laws of Malta (applicants are to be duly admitted to the said Register by not later than 12 months from their employment date)
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in both Maltese and English languages. 
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office and office automation tools.
  • Sound understanding of the laws that govern the prevention of money laundering and funding of terrorism in Malta, EU legislation and international standards in the area.

​The following are not mandatory but would be considered an asset:

  • Previous experience in applying anti-money laundering and counter-funding of terrorism legislation. 
  • Knowledge of other relevant domestic and EU legislation regulating sector/s that the FIAU supervises and/or familiarity with the operations of the said sector/s.
